Tiahrt Statement on Latest Assault on Law Enforcement, 2nd Amendment Privacy Rights

I have not done an in depth post on this yet, but we all need to be wary of this new anti-gun organization, Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) created by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. They claim to be concerned about stopping “illegal” guns and fighting crime, but in reality the group has been founded to take more rights away from law abiding gun owners. This continues the liberal axiom; if you can’t accomplish something legitimately, lie your butt off and do it dishonestly. Below is a press release from Representative Todd Tiahrt. MAIG is hard at work on attacking the Tiahrt Amendment. Oh yeah, by the way, Mayor Mark Funkhouser is a proud member of MAIG. More on that in a future post.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) issued the following statement about another in a series of false accusations perpetrated by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his anti-gun organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns. In a syndicated op-ed column this week, E. J. Dionne Jr. released results from a survey funded by Bloomberg’s organization and deceptively charged that the Tiahrt amendment restricts police from enforcing firearm laws.

“The Tiahrt amendment protects those who protect us by ensuring trace data remains fully accessible to law enforcement officials while keeping sensitive information away from criminals, terrorists and organizations that could jeopardize ongoing criminal investigations or endanger officers’ lives,” said Tiahrt. “Had Mr. Dionne taken time to read the Tiahrt amendment, he would have known what the law does. Mayor Bloomberg’s assault on the Tiahrt amendment is an assault on the protections it affords law enforcement officials and privacy rights of legal firearm owners.

“Mr. Dionne’s claim this week that the Tiahrt amendment restricts police from enforcing the law is patently wrong. We have worked very hard to ensure the men and women who serve in law enforcement are provided the tools necessary to enforce firearm laws that help keep our communities safe. As the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, the Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed the Tiahrt amendment because it helps law enforcement do their job. It is critical that we protect undercover officers and their investigations from sabotage by special interest groups like Mayor Bloomberg’s organization.

What you need to understand is that you may have a legal right to own a gun, but you do not have a moral right.

Over 10,000 people die by firearm each year in the US. Only about 200 of those are self defense, and most of those are police shootings.

So 50 people die for every one person saved.

    That’s just plain stupid.

What’s plain stupid is the fact that you can’t rationally see that it’s not the firearm that causes the crime. You think removing the weapon is going to change anything?

You need to get your facts straight about violent crime, as well. Gun ownership and right to carry status is at an all time high in this nation while violent crime is at an all time low. Funny correlation I know. To be really specific violent crime is at a 35 year low and murder is at a 45 year low. That’s according to the FBI preliminary report from 2008. http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?id=206&issue=007 Read it for yourself, complete with citations and links.

Here is the beauty of this. You are a minority voice in this nation. Poll after poll indicates that American’s overwhelmingly believe in the Right To Carry, the right to own a firearm, and the importance of the second amendment. My kids will be taught this. I will continue to support the NRA proudly as both a recruiter and a member.

By definition stupid is lacking ordinary quickness or keenness of mind. Thank you kindly for allowing me to demonstrate facts, and to help you realize how foolish you really are. We live in a culture permeated by violence and lack of values. This lack of values and intellectual dishonesty is continuously perpetrated by the left side of the political aisle which I highly suspect you are one of. Those that support the second amendment, view a firearm as a defensive weapon, and support the second amendment do not grind people up in the streets. Look at where the violent crime exists in this nation, the inner cities. Which in countless city after city is ran by those of your political persuasion. Get a clue.
