Below is another press release from Representative Rob Schaaf’s office. This is the second bill he has proposed on campaign ethics. I do not like the first one HB 1655, this dog may hunt though. I see no problem with this.

REP. SCHAAF INTRODUCES BILL TO REFORM CAMPAIGN ETHICS

St. Joseph, MO— This week State Rep. Rob Schaaf introduced a bill to require candidates filing for statewide office to name the offices for which they are running.  Current state law prohibits candidates from forming committees to run for house or senate leadership positions.  Such candidates skirt the law by forming statewide committees and using the funds to buy the support of other members in tight races.

“Leadership positions should be awarded on ability and nothing more,” said Rep. Schaaf.  “The law was enacted for a reason, and this change is needed only because candidates have not respected its intent.  Because a person cannot run for two offices at the same time, my bill should put a stop to these shenanigans. ”

A special House committee is currently studying ethics reform, and Schaaf said he would ask that his bill, HB 1708, be referred there and considered along with other ethics reform ideas.

The bill can be seen at: http://www.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills101/biltxt/intro/HB1708I.htm
