Have you heard the news about Walgreens? A pharmacist, Jeremy Hoven, defended his life and the lives of fellow coworkers when gunmen entered his store in Benton Township, Michigan Sunday May 8, 2011 at 4:30 AM. It was yet another example of why concealed carry permits are valuable and prevent crimes.

Walgreens’ response? You’re fired. Nope, not kidding, they claim Mr. Hoven violated company policy and terminated him.

I decided to email Walgreens. I don’t shop there often, but had started filling prescriptions there. After their behavior and response to my email, I’ll never shop there again.

Here is their response:

Dear Andrew,

“Thank you for contacting Walgreens regarding this matter. Our policies in this area are designed to maintain the maximum safety of our customers and employees. Store employees receive comprehensive training on our company’s robbery procedures and how to react and respond to a potential robbery situation. In past incidents, employees have told us they’ve found this training effective. These policies and training programs are endorsed by law enforcement, which strongly advises against confrontation of crime suspects. Compliance is safer than confrontation. Through this practice, we have been able to maintain an exemplary record of safety. We’ve made significant investments in security technology in recent years, including increasing the number of digital surveillance cameras at our stores. With upgrades to security technology, we are able to provide police with high-resolution photographs and video of crime suspects. We continue to invest in state-of-the-art security measures and high-definition surveillance equipment and hope that the apprehension of robbery suspects in the Benton Harbor area will prevent future crimes. Thank you for contacting Walgreens to share your comments.”

I am a little amazed at their response. “We’ve made significant investments in security technology in recent years, including increasing the number of digital surveillance cameras at our stores.” That’s great! Because the digital surveillance cameras, in the middle of a holdup, will save lives. Digital cameras will deter violent crime, too. Only a moron would believe this. I get really tired of this mentality. Do we not value life enough to allow people to defend their own lives?

Our policies are designed to benefit the maximum safety of our customers and employees? Really?

This same store was robbed in 2007. Mr. Hoven and other store employees complained to the company about the shortcomings of store security. Mr. Hoven said nothing was done.

When it comes to firearms American’s are incredibly ignorant. Walgreens is fully demonstrating this fact. With proper training, people that carry firearms are of absolutely NO THREAT and save lives! Mr. Hoven took the state-required Carrying a Concealed Weapon class through the Berrien County Sportsman’s Club in Oronoko Township in 2008.

What if Mr. Hoven hadn’t carried his weapon that evening and the robbers had shot and killed the employees? Man, sure glad you guys have those high definition cameras. At least you can help catch the bad guys AFTER your employees died because of your foolish company policy.

Don’t get me wrong, Walgreens has every right to have this policy. It’s a private business, it’s on private property. What’s unfortunate is they believe their policy will actually save lives and prevent crime. There’s no deterrent being offered here. Heck, if I was a criminal in America, I think I would start to actually target Walgreens storefront. They just announced to the entire country that they would prefer their employees to be defenseless in a life or death situation.
